Bits: Infantree, Filter, Camu Tao, Robert Wilson, Mark Lanegan, Isobel Campbell

  • If you’ll be in the Los Angeles, California, area on September 14th, get your R.S.V.P. to Infantree and be on the guest list for their album release party.
  • Due to the Cleveland connection, I feel compelled to note that Filter’s new album is streaming at AOL Music. (I’ll just say that it’s no Short Bus.)
  • But on another Ohio-centric tip, the posthumous solo album from Columbus’ Camu Tao (on fabulous Fat Possum Records) is also streaming at AOL Music. (I’m digging it.)
  • Robert Wilson, bassist and one of the three brothers who made up the Gap Band, died this past Sunday at the age of 53.
  • Saying Mark Lanegan and Isobel Campbell are working together again is becoming a bit like saying Robert Pollard is putting out a new album. They’ve got a good thing going, though, so check out their new video for “You Won’t Let Me Down Again”. The album, Hawk, is streaming on Campbell’s Facebook page.

  • NTSIB favorites Cadillac Sky will be touring with Mumford & Sons from late October to mid-November. They’re not coming through Ohio, but, hey, I’m not weeping bitterly while wondering what I’ve done to anger the music gods or anything…

  • Christopher Porterfield of Conrad Plymouth is playing some solo dates in support of Jeremy Messersmith. He promises some brand new material.

  • People have been all… uh… atwitter about Kanye West joining Twitter, but the new Twitter poster you really want to follow is Wayne Coyne (I don’t have to tell you he’s the beneficent leader of the Flaming Lips, right?). He will make you happy.
  • Northeastern Ohio music fans are proud of the Black Keys. Obvious statement is obvious. We are proud of the blow-the-top-of-your-head-off music they make, but there’s another aspect of these guys that makes us proud, too, as illustrated in this clip from one of their recent Toronto shows (if you’re impatient, go to the 2:05 mark).     Bits: A.A. Bondy, Freddie Gibbs, You Weren’t There, The Afghan Whigs, I Need That Record!

  • A.A. Bondy trotted out a couple of new songs, “Another Country” and “Slow and Lo”, at the Newport Folk Festival. You can listen to (and download) his Saturday set at NPR Music.
  • This week, Yours Truly is featuring 5 Days of Fred with daily features on Freddie Gibbs.
  • This week, Pitchfork’s One Week Only feature is You Weren’t There: A History of Chicago Punk 1977-1984.
  • Summerskiss has confirmed that the Afghan Whigs’ final album, 1965, will be re-issued on 180 gram vinyl with seven bonus tracks and an 8-page booklet on August 24. It’s a European-only release.
  • I Need That Record!, Brendan Toller’s heart-wrenching documentary about the state of independent record stores in America, is now widely available on DVD, including through Amazon and Netflix. This was one of NTSIB’s favorite scores from Record Store Day this year, and we encourage you to check it out.

    • The big freaking news for me personally this week is Greg fucking Dulli’s (in my world, this is his actual, legal name) first solo tour. “An Evening with Greg Dulli” will be making the rounds in the U.S. and Europe in October and November. Afghan Whigs songs are promised, as are brand new Twilight Singers tunes.

    • The Alan Lomax Archive now has a YouTube Channel with footage of R.L. Burnside, Sam Chatmon and more.

    • Our friends at Buddyhead have a new Grinderman song for you, “Heathen Child”, along with the scary and possibly not-safe-for-work cover art.

    • The charming Futurebirds release Hampton Lullaby today, and you can take a listen at Spinner.

    • Bonnie “Prince” Billy and Cheyenne Mize have released a sweet and mellow EP of covers called Among the Gold. You can listen here and download here.

    Additional Bits: Guided By Voices, Andrew Bird

    • This was too good not to make an additional post for: Guided By Voices will be reuniting to play the Matador Records 21st anniversary gig in Las Vegas this October.

    • For those on the other side of the States, Andrew Bird will be collaborating with Ian Schneller, the sculptor who makes Bird’s Victrola speaker-style amplifiers, for a project called “Sonic Arboretum”, which will include a performance from Bird, at the Guggenheim Museum on August 5.

    • Les Savy Fav will release a new album, Root For Ruin on September 14.

    • Also dropping September 14 will be the Walkmen’s Fat Possum debut, Lisbon. The band will hit the road next month.

    • Lissie, who has been a cover song powerhouse this year, will release her first full album, Catching a Tiger, on August 17, and you can pre-order it from Fat Possum now.

    • Via RZA’s Twitter: Post a picture of yourself with the Swarm cover/logo to RZA’s Facebook for a chance to win an autographed copy of Pollen: The Swarm, Part 3. Winner will be chosen June 26.

    • NTSIB favorite and part of the inspiration for turning this blog into a reality, A.A. Bondy will be hitting the road again in October, sharing dates with his new label-mates the Walkmen.
